All about student regalia

  • Regalia is purchased from the Main Campus Bookstore.
  • Please arrive already dressed in your regalia. How to wear regalia.
  • Tassel should be worn on the right side of your cap, until the tassel ceremony in which the graduating class collectively moves the tassel from the right to the left during the ceremony.
  • Masters graduates wear their hoods to the ceremony.
  • Doctoral and terminal degree graduates should arrive carrying, but not wearing their hoods. Their hoods will be placed on them by faculty during the hooding ceremony portion of the event.

Representing yourself or your heritage

  • Commencement academic regalia must be worn, but it can be left unzipped and open to display your own heritage or cultural regalia underneath it
  • Caps and tassels must be worn. Shawls, cords, stoles, etc., should be academic or from a University-recognized student organization.
  • Tasteful decoration of caps is permitted. However, if it is determined to be offensive by a Marshal, you will have to remove it to participate.

Lost regalia

  • There is not backup regalia available at the event, so please double-check your regalia before you leave.
  • We recommend that you hang up your regalia a few days before commencement, to make sure you have all the necessary pieces. If you are missing an item, please make sure to pick it up at the UNM Bookstore with enough time to ensure you can arrive at the Pit at the appropriate time.
