Honorary Degree: Doug Brown
Doug Brown was drawn from California to New Mexico 38 years ago to rescue a failing bank. His career went on to starting a financial enterprise that grew to over $2 billion in revenues, followed by the building of a non-profit that Business Week named “ Best Product of the Year”. The Governor then asked Brown to take over as State Treasurer to fix a scandal-ridden agency. This tour was followed by a six-year term as Dean of Anderson School at UNM.
On the volunteer front, Brown has been a member of over 50 nonprofit boards, including Stanford University and NPR. His service to UNM has continued uninterrupted for 38 years and has included two terms as Regent, four years as Chair.
Awards include accolades from his Alma mater Stanford, from the U.S. Army. He was named Albuquerque’s top CEO and New Mexico’s Distinguished Leader.
On the personal front, he and Sarah have been married 51 years, have four children and four grandchildren. Sarah’s commitment to public service was recognized by the establishment of UNM’s Sarah Belle Brown Award.
